Why Use Lime?

Lime has been used as a plastering material for centuries due to its excellent properties. Here are some reasons why lime is used for plastering:

Breathability

Lime plaster is highly breathable, allowing moisture to evaporate and pass through the material. This characteristic is especially beneficial in older buildings or structures with limited or no damp-proofing measures. It helps to prevent moisture build-up, condensation, and subsequent damage to the underlying materials.

Moisture & Thermal Regulation
Lime plaster helps regulate both moisture and temperature within a building. By allowing walls to breathe and dry naturally, it helps reduce damp conditions and creates a more stable internal environment.

Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

Lime is a more environmentally responsible material than modern cement-based alternatives. It requires less energy to produce, generates lower carbon emissions, and can often be recycled or reused. Lime also continues to reabsorb carbon dioxide as it cures.

Durability

When applied correctly, lime plaster can last for generations. Its ability to weather naturally and accommodate movement allows it to outperform many modern rigid materials over time.

Flexibility

Lime plaster is more flexible than cement plaster, which makes it ideal for use on walls that are prone to movement. This flexibility helps to prevent cracking and ensures that the plaster stays intact for longer.

Self-healing

Lime plaster has the ability to self-heal minor cracks that may appear over time. This means that the plaster can repair itself and maintain its integrity for longer periods of time.

Historic Authenticity

Lime has been the material of choice for historic buildings for centuries. It is the only appropriate material for restoration and conservation work where historical accuracy and breathability are essential. Using lime helps preserve the heritage and character of traditional properties.

Aesthetics

Lime plaster has a unique, natural appearance. It is also available in a wide range of colours, textures, and finishes, making it a versatile choice for a variety of applications.

Compatibility with Traditional Materials
Lime works in harmony with traditional building materials such as stone, brick, and timber. Unlike modern cement mortars, which can trap moisture and cause damage, lime allows the building fabric to behave naturally and protects the surrounding masonry.

*Important Information About Lime Work

Lime plastering and rendering is a traditional craft that cannot be rushed. It involves multiple hand-applied coats, each requiring careful application and correct curing time. Lime materials are natural and require specialist knowledge to handle properly. Because of the time, skill, and materials involved, lime work is often more expensive than modern cement-based alternatives. However, when applied correctly, lime provides a breathable, flexible, and long-lasting finish that protects the building fabric and preserves its historic character. For period and heritage properties, lime is not simply a finish, it is an investment in the long-term health and performance of the building.
