External Lime Rendering & Lime Pointing

  1. Traditional Lime Rendering
Lime render is a breathable external coating used to protect masonry while allowing moisture to evaporate naturally. Unlike modern cement renders, lime remains flexible and permeable, helping traditional buildings manage moisture and movement without trapping damp within the wall structure.

  2. Traditional Lime Harling
Harling is a traditional method of lime roughcasting external walls, commonly used in exposed and coastal areas. A wet lime mortar is thrown onto the wall surface, embedding the aggregate within the mix to create a durable textured finish. Lime harling offers excellent resistance to wind-driven rain and performs particularly well in coastal environments.

  3. Lime Pointing
Lime pointing involves repointing the mortar joints between stone or brick using breathable lime mortar. This traditional method protects the masonry while allowing the wall to remain flexible and breathable, helping moisture escape naturally and preventing damage to the surrounding stonework.

  4. Limewash Finishes
Limewash is a traditional breathable coating made from lime and water. Often applied over lime render or lime pointing, limewash provides a protective and decorative finish while maintaining the wall’s natural breathability.

  5. Traditional Bagged Lime Finish
A bagged lime finish is created by applying lime mortar and working it back using hessian or similar materials. This technique produces a subtle textured finish often used on historic masonry where a softer, more traditional appearance is desired.

Internal Lime Plastering

  1. Flat Lime Plaster
Flat lime plaster creates a smooth, refined finish suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors. It retains all the benefits of lime plaster, including breathability, flexibility, and long-term durability.

  2. Insulating Lime Plasters (e.g. Hemp Lime)
Insulating lime plasters incorporate natural materials such as hemp to improve thermal performance while maintaining the breathability of traditional lime systems. These plasters are ideal for internal walls where improved comfort, insulation, and moisture control are required.

Breathable Thermal Upgrades

  1. Natural Insulation Boards

Where appropriate, we can incorporate breathable insulation systems using natural materials such as cork boards, wood fibre boards, or wood wool boards. These systems can significantly improve thermal performance while remaining fully compatible with traditional lime plaster systems, helping to enhance comfort without compromising the building’s ability to breathe.
